Bluestone Resorts Ltd employs up to 350 local people and is based in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales. Created in 550 acres of glorious countryside near Narberth, Bluestone is a world-class, year round leisure and holiday destination.

Bluestone’s founder and CEO, William McNamara, is personally committed to making Bluestone a low carbon impact business and recognises their environmental credentials provide a key differentiation from competitors.  In the construction phase, completed in July 2008, there was the opportunity to incorporate some innovative initiatives into the design and this has been followed through with an operational commitment.

Processes

Examples of activity include a  biomass fuelled energy centre, installation of solar thermal panels on 100 lodges providing hot water, an energy reduction target of 5% per annum against occupancy incorporated into every operational managers Key Performance Indicators.  They have also worked with Envirowise on a supplier programme to reduce incoming packaging waste which was successful and had indirect positive impacts on waste to landfill.

Impact

  • Energy cost savings achieved just through better housekeeping and system control alone have been in the region of £100,000 in 2009. This was without any investment in energy saving initiatives.
  • Monthly electricity consumption has reduced by 36.5% due to energy saving initiatives.
  • Improved management of use of heat from the energy centre has resulted in improved efficiencies of around 26% reduction in monthly heat consumption.
  • Diverted 34% of total waste generated from landfill for recycling.
