BT - reducing its footprint

The Prince's May Day Network and Climate Change Award Sponsored by Bank of America

BT’s response to the increased challenge to cut carbon emissions includes reducing BT’s own footprint, influencing its suppliers to produce products that emit fewer emissions, helping customers by providing lower carbon solutions and engaging employees to reduce their personal carbon emissions.

Process

BT has reduced its carbon footprint by 58% since 1996 and has set a target to achieve an 80% in the UK by 2016.  One of the actions to reach this target is to generate up to 25% of its current UK electricity needs by 2016 from wind farms on or adjacent to BT sites and has recently installed solar panels at its El Segundo office and data centre in California that supply up to 20% of the site’s energy requirements.
BT encourages home and flexible working and web, audio and video conferencing and has held several employee engagement programmes.

Impact

  • BT has 14,500 people that work from home and 64,000 more are equipped to work flexibly
  • Use of conferencing has enabled BT employees to avoid 751,046 face-to-face meetings last year, equivalent to 2.72million return journeys
  • Established over 120 carbon clubs and has actively engaged more than 3,500 BT people in doing some positive for the environment
