The Camelot team

Camelot Group plc

What a fantastic experience!  It was a great way for colleagues to learn about each others skills and build relationships.

Jan CowardRegional Centre Manager of Camelot Group plc.

Going ‘back to school’ helped Camelot Group staff build relationships and feel a real sense of achievement. The pupils and staff of Somerton Primary School now have a more attractive learning and teaching environment.

Camelot Group employees from seven different UK offices built relationships with colleagues they don’t usually work with while brightening up three classrooms and a corridor at Somerton Primary School in Newport.

Business Objective:

To encourage team building between colleagues who don’t work together on a day-to-day basis

Social Benefit:

With three newly painted classrooms and a much improved corridor area, the children have a much more attractive environment in which to learn

Process

Camelot was looking to undertake a two-day team project which would allow them to bring 22 employees together from offices across the UK.

Business in the Community sourced a suitable project at Somerton Primary School and arranged team leader training to give practical tips for achieving a successful project. Time management, working within budgetary constraints, fundraising and team building skills were vital to the success of the project which included preparation work, painting, and decorating.

The Camelot staff committed to a total

of 350 volunteering hours and also fundraised £1500 to cover the cost of paints and materials, as well as blinds for the classroom windows to prevent glare on the  whiteboards.

Impact

  • Staff got to know each other and build relationships in an informal environment
  • Business volunteers pulled together as a team to achieve a result, giving everyone a great sense of satisfaction and achievement, as well as contributing to a worthwhile project
  • Planning and organising the project re-enforced time management skills. By working on a project together, team members learned about each others strengths and skills.
  • The pupils at Somerton Primary School, particularly Years 4 & 5, have a much improved learning environment. The newly painted corridor provides a lighter entrance and feel to the school for children, teachers and parents alike.
  • Inspired by the work that had been completed; new pictures and pieces of work have proudly been put on display. Having business volunteers care and take an interest in the school has sent a positive message to the pupils from this deprived area.
