Wates Construction

Winner of the East of England Carbon Positive Award

Wates has three areas of corporate responsibility focus: to reduce the impact of carbon emissions from their activities, eliminate all non-hazardous waste to landfill and to boost skills and employability in communities of most need.

Wates Construction

Wates is one of the UK’s largest family-owned construction services and development companies. They work across a range of sectors, including education, prisons, affordable housing, retail refurbishment, office interiors and land development.

Wates is committed to being an industry-leading, low carbon organisation that embraces and embodies sustainable business practises with a long-term positive impact. They are committed to making more effi cient use of energy, water and fuel which will reduce the direct emissions of carbon from their activities. They work to support their customers to design and deliver low-carbon buildings. Their strategic approach to sustainability focuses on four priorities: eliminating waste, reducing their carbon footprint, sourcing responsibly and transforming communities. All of these have structured programmes which enable them to measure the impact of what they do.

They carefully manage and employ their resources, including their employees and supply chain, to optimise their ability to effectively reduce their carbon footprint. These include: environmental packs for all sites and offices; green travel plans for every project; all sites measure associated carbon emissions; monthly fuel and CO2 statements to all employees; and they encourage cycling to work.

Impact

  • 3% year on year reduction in employee travel
  • Diverted 96% of its waste from landfill on projects in the East of England
  • By transporting only full loads of materials this has reduced the distances travelled, reduced carbon emissions and brought cost savings to projects
  • 25% take up since Wates launched their Green Car scheme last year – a car allowance scheme incentivizing employees to procure low carbon emission vehicles
