EDF Energy – creating a sustainable energy culture

Barclays Environmental Leadership Award, supported by the CBI

EDF Energy has committed to reduce the carbon footprint from its own use of energy by 30% by 2012, and is extending its impact through innovative projects to help its customers reduce their energy use.

Process

EDF Energy is a leading energy company, responsible for the generation, distribution and supply of electricity and gas.  Recognising that it has a significant impact on the environment, the company has committed to transform itself into a truly sustainable business.  EDF Energy’s ‘Our Climate Commitments’ set a target to reduce the carbon intensity of the company’s electricity generation by 60% by 2020.

EDF Energy recognised that before it could encourage customers and employees to reduce carbon emissions, it would need to put its own house in order.   It has cut emissions from offices and depots, reduced the volume of materials sent to landfill, and is already making its existing power stations more efficient. The company is also investing in new renewable projects including wind and marine power and other low carbon technologies.

EDF Energy is also taking a lead in supporting its customers.  The company has developed an energy efficiency toolkit for business customers which helps them reduce energy use through a 5-step process.  It has also given tailored support, for example evaluating three of Royal Mail’s sites, identifying energy saving potentials ranging up to 43%.  For its retail customers, EDF Energy has introduced the ‘Read, Reduce and Reward’ scheme which rewards customers for reducing their energy consumption. Over 300,000 retail customers have signed up to the scheme to date.

EDF Energy believes these initiatives and its leadership will attract new customers, increase staff satisfaction and maintain the support of other stakeholders.

Impact

  • Company carbon footprint reduced by 19% per person to date
  • Office operation’s energy costs reduced by £310,000 a year
  • The Energy Efficiency Toolkit brought in over £30m of new revenue, and over 1,000 businesses have implemented this toolkit with an average energy saving of 10% (205,321 tonnes of carbon over year)
