Process

Volunteers work with young people who take part in the IMPACT clubs, organized by New Horizons Foundation (NHF).

Programme stages:

Stage 1 - Employee training for volunteering activities
Stage 2 - Mentoring activities
Stage 3 - Corporate visit
Stage 4 - Spring Intensive School
Stage 5 - Community project

1 Employee training for volunteering activities
ARC and New Horizons Foundation prepared training for the volunteers on the following topics: what is corporate volunteering, what it means to offer employability sessions to young people, why are the sessions needed and how they should interact with students.

2 Mentoring activities
The mentoring activities involve the volunteers and beneficiaries having 3 hour meetings on specific topics where volunteers share their knowledge and experiences as practitioners in their field.

Topics can include:
• Entrepreneurship and management tools
• Employability
• Communication
• Community responsibility
• Leadership
• Technology

The volunteers can develop their facilitation skills by preparing for the training sessions and delivering the training. Topics are chosen based on student requests, the company area of activity and the volunteer’s expertise.

3 Corporate visit
Students visit different locations and departments of the company, thus learning the importance of specific jobs and the main functions of the company. The employees present specific products and how they are made, or a job or department and its function within the overall operational system.
The visits usually last between three to five hours and even involve top management as volunteers.

4 Intensive Spring School
The Spring School is organized over one week in both locations (Cluj and Bucharest), mobilizing volunteers from all the partner companies. Volunteers choose a topic that they would like to train the students with in order to improve both knowledge and abilities.

5 Community projects
Community Projects are designed focussing on topics chosen by the students. Corporate volunteers then vote which project they wish to support and based on these votes and internal selection, the top projects receive financial and volunteer support from member companies.

During the 2010 - 2011 year, ARC received the official support of three important company partners for the project: Orange Romania, Citibank Romania and law firm Kinstellar.

Impact

  • 35 volunteers participated in the projects in 2010 - 2011, benefiting 300 students
  • The students had the opportunity to understand what it means to start a career and make good decisions, and the volunteer expressed their interest in continuing the mentoring activities
  • Over 260 volunteer hours were donated to support two not for profit organisations.
