ENGAGE Milan

ENGAGE Milan aims to empower and enhance the employability of students of Fondazione Enaip, an NGO that offers professional training courses for disadvantaged teenagers aged 14 to 18 in the Milan Province. Some of the students are immigrants, many of them disadvantaged and suffering from social and familial problems. The courses help to strengthen the students’ communication, team work and interpersonal skills, and improve their motivation and attitude to life and work.

Process

Brought together by Fondazione Sodalitas, who also run the mobi³ programme in Milan, and Fondazione Enaip, company volunteers work in collaboration on the project which is delivered incrementally through 3 stages:

Stage One – Presentation
Employees provide a one-off, one hour, presentation to a class on their personal and professional experience. This presentation may be reproduced in other classes.

Stage Two – Business Simulation
Employees provide students with three or four regular training sessions on professional life. The training sessions give each student direct contact with specific aspects of professional life of different professions (for example, a journalist can lead a simulation session on multi-media and how a newsroom is run).

Stage Three – Individual mentoring
Assisted by Fondazione Enaip teachers, employees build a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a student, with the aim of providing the ongoing support and encouragement for the student’s learning and maturity.

In addition to employee assistance, companies may enhance the project’s impact by hosting Fondazione Enaip students in their offices for a day of work experience. Furthermore, companies could offer scholarship aid grants to deserving, but economically disadvantaged, students.
