GE Healthcare, The Science Resource Library

Education Award

In October 2005 The Maynard Centre set up a Science Resource Library to provide primary schools with modern and fun science resources. The primary objective was to encourage an interest in science from an early age, by enabling primary schools from across South Wales to borrow scientific equipment, from microscopes to a skeleton named ‘Bones’, over three week periods.

Processes

In response to the decline in take up of science based subjects and a lack of financial resource within schools to provide the equipment for inspiring and engaging experiments GE Healthcare and the Maynard Centre set up the resource library.
The library’s reach has increased from an original 11 primary schools in the Cardiff area to a point where resources are now made available to any primary school in South Wales that can arrange collection and return of the equipment.

Impact

  • 100% of teachers reported lessons are more enjoyable for the pupils using science resources, an increase of 9% from 2008.
  • 100% of teachers reported it was useful to have access to the Science Resource Library, up from 93% in 2008.
  • Nearly10,000 pupils have benefited from resources provided by the Science Resource Library to date.
  • Increased morale amongst GE Healthcare employees, increased profile amongst media and key opinion formers achieved.
