Henderson’s gets the edge with a sustainable strategic approach

The business issue

The Henderson Group is a family run business that operates across Northern Ireland, headquartered in Mallusk, and employs 2,262 people.

The organisation places high standards on waste & energy management and continues to explore new technologies to ensure the sustainability of the business for many generations to come.  It is the company’s strategic approach to sustainability that gives the Henderson Group the edge over its competitors in a tough market.

What the Henderson Group did

Energy - To help reduce energy consumption the company has replaced lighting at the main distribution centre and installs energy saving controls in the fresh foods storage warehouse.

In April 2009 Henderson’s invested £20,000 by fitting High Speed Doors into the Fresh Foods Warehouse. These doors have contributed to a reduction in energy usage with a saving of £9800 over a year. These fast folding high speed doors are designed to restrict access, optimize traffic flow, maintain temperatures, increase light and reduce energy loss.

Henderson’s have planned the installation of liquid pumps into the Fresh Foods refrigeration system to save a further 20% of energy usage for the refrigeration plant.

New energy meters on site allow for effective monitoring of energy usage in each department and these readings assist in setting energy saving targets per department.

Transport - A Transport Trainer whose sole responsibility is to train drivers on fuel efficiency driving techniques has been employed.

In addition a satellite tracking system with advanced technology gives valuable insight and builds a clear picture of our environmental impact by: improving driving behaviours; lowering carbon emissions; making fuel savings; reducing maintenance fleet costs; improving delivery times; and Benchmarking against industry averages

Waste - A Waste Management area has been put in place to centralize waste streams and insure that the majority of materials we dispose off are being segregated and recycled.

The organisation has started dialogue with a contractor to remove all our food waste for composting.

A Emergency Response Team was established and trained to deal with any spillages which may potentially be a threat to the water courses on site.

The company are also in dialogue with suppliers to reduce packaging coming on site.

Impact

  • Henderson’s energy consumption continues to drop, over 125k units in 2009, saving the company over £48k
  • Through their waste initiatives they have reduced tonnage to landfill by 54
  • It has discovered that the investments and initiatives introduced to reduce its impacts have delivered more than just cost savings but also a more engaged, valued workforce.
