Legal & General and Rational Madness – engaging employees

The Prince's Mayday Network

Legal & General used theatre performance challenge employee’s conventional approaches to the sustainability message and exploring personal sustainability issues.

Process

Inspired by its company research that revealed ‘82% of Brits are annoyed by government and business initiatives that are forcing green values on them’, Legal & General employed Rational Madness Theatre Company to provide a new and innovative way of encouraging employees to think about resource use.

The theatre company developed a tailored performance which toured Legal & General offices across the UK and then went on to play at public venues in Edinburgh Fringe and Brighton.

The play challenges employee’s conventional approaches to the sustainability message; exploring personal sustainability issues and how these integrate with corporate and global messages and problems.

Legal & General found that working with Rational Madness presented an opportunity to look at the way the company approached sustainability in a more creative way.

Impact

  • This play was one of the reasons why in 2008 Legal & General saw a reduction in resources needed to run our business. Business Mileage was down 1.2 million miles versus 2007. Paper usage was down and we have seen a reduction in travel on business
  • Used the play to unearth employee expectations of what the company needed to do to be greener; discovered a healthy cynicism within people on green issues
