Ipswich Building Society - Business Team Volunteering

Ipswich Building Society staff are encouraged to support individual charity projects which are match funded by the Society. In addition, they recognise that time can be more valuable than money and encourage staff to volunteer as part of their working day giving employees half a day a month to volunteer

Team Volunteering Award

Ipswich Building Society is a ‘mutual’ organisation working in the best interests of 65,000 members and was founded in 1849. The aim is to provide people with a safe place for their money, help them buy their own home and enrich the community in which people live. It employs almost 100 people with nine branches and six agencies.

Their corporate responsibility programme has been enhanced through community involvement, charity fundraising and sponsorship.

Ipswich Building Society has a strong fi nancial education programme, helping children improve their understanding of money matters. Over 34 ‘Money Days’ have been run in Suffolk primary schools to date with a further 16 planned for 2011.

The volunteering undertaken by the staff has helped raise their profile within their heartland and helped the local branches to become an integral part of the community.

Impact

  • More than 560 volunteer hours given by staff to community projects during 2010
  • 330 staff hours have been dedicated to ‘Money Days’ in Suffolk Primary Schools
  • £30,800 charity donations including £10,000 raised for the EACH Treehouse Appeal and £13,000 for the Ipswich United Appeal
