Janis Murphy from Aircelle, winner of the Lancaster University Management School North West Award for Leadership for Sustainability

Emgerging Leader

Janis Murphy, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager for Burnley based Aircelle Ltd, has used her dynamism and passion to engage employees across the organisation to drive improved performance to achieve a more sustainable business.

Having joined Aircelle at a time when HSE was in need of revival and the concepts of sustainable development were relatively new, Janis quickly established herself as a core member of the leadership team, bringing HSE issues to the fore. With a clear understanding of the importance of communication to inspire and lead others, Janis has driven employee engagement in recycling and energy improvement projects across the organisation. She has engaged with other managers to support them to take on their own accountabilities for HSE performance

Key initiatives Janis has established include a cross-organisational HSE Steering Group, and an Environmental Resource Management Group. She is also steering activity to develop an innovative process for recycling carbon fibre. In striving to deliver high performance within her role, Janis has built strong relationships with external organisations and taken on additional responsibility internally where it adds value to HSE. This includes assuming responsibility for refreshing Aircelle's CSR strategy and incorporating environment as part of the measures.

Janis's leadership has been integral in: improving recycling by 12% at Aircelle, raising the profile of the sustainability agenda, investing £5,000 of recycling revenue in employee-based initiatives such as the Employee Garden and enlisting Aircelle's Managing Director to represent the company in "START" activities.
