Before coming on the Ready for Work programme in 2010, Marc had not worked since 2003. Homeless, using drugs, and with an offending background, he struggled to see how he his life could be any different and did not know where to turn for help
When Marc’s drug worker referred him to the Ready for Work programme, he saw the opportunity it could offer and was determined to make the most of it. He took part in two days training with BAOH in Birmingham. Having been out of the work place for so long, he built up plenty of new tips and skills that would help him on his placement:
“I went on the two training days and realised that this is my chance now, so I put everything into it.”
Marc spent two weeks at Cadbury, working on the production line and in the staff shop. He was supported during this time by his placement buddy, Carl, who showed him the ropes and introduced him to his colleagues. Marc loved the Cadbury work environment and the friendly staff and did all he could to make a great impression.
With no jobs available immediately, Marc was assigned a job coach who met him weekly and guided him through writing his CV and applying for jobs. But Cadbury were so keen to keep such a great worker, who had already built up a bank of knowledge and skills on placement, that they were delighted to be able to give him a call when there was a suitable job opening. Marc now works making Cadbury Roses alongside some of the first people he met when on placement.
Although he found the routine a sharp contrast from his previous life, Marc has thrown himself into his job, always offering to help in other departments if they need extra workers. Gaining employment has also built Marc’s confidence and helped him to improve his personal life. He has plenty of new friends and for the first time he has opened a bank account, has learnt to manage his money and is able to treat himself and his family on occasions.
No longer offending, Marc’s life has changed dramatically thanks to all the chances that Ready for Work had to offer. He his now saving up so that he can move to a safer area and hopes to be employed at Cadbury for a long time to come.
