MITIE Group PLC, Skills for MITIE, Skills for life

The Skills for MITIE, Skills for Life programme offers development opportunities for the company’s front line, entry-level employees. MITIE is one of the largest employers of apprentices in the UK, and in 2008 set themselves the challenging target of delivering 8,700 apprenticeships and NVQs (or equivalent) by 2012. This significant investment brings tangible business benefits by improving the literacy and numeracy skills of their people.

MITIE’s mission is ‘to responsibly deliver quality services, opportunity for our people and sustainable growth’. Their people really are their greatest asset and they demonstrate this though the significant commitment to training that they offer staff. This commitment was underlined when they became the first major Facilities Management business to commit to the Skills Pledge.

Utilising MITIE’s in-house training teams and national training providers, they offer a range of apprenticeships as well as Skills for Life courses in literacy and numeracy. These are run during working hours, enabling staff to gain NVQ and other accredited qualifications. English is a second language to many of their employees, so their improved levels of literacy and numeracy, as well as the training and development they provide entry-level employees, also provide significant social benefits.

Impact

MITIE’s Skills for Life programme has:

  • raised the skill levels of existing entry level Team Members
  • trained employees to deliver the standard of technical and softer services their customers expect, rather than utilizing sub-contractors
  • provided team members with a new range of skills which are portable outside of the workplace, into family and social settings
  • trained apprentices to guarantee a sustainable and competent workforce
  • created employment opportunities for former MITIE Skills Centre students
