United Utilities North West Start Innovating Award

Winner - Morrison

Morrison is a leading provider of repairs, maintenance and capital projects for councils, housing associations, management organisations and private companies. The Carbon Neutral Repairs Service (CNRS) was created to address the key environmental challenges facing social housing providers whilst helping to combat fuel poverty.

Through the CNRS, emissions produced by tenants’ properties are offset by fitting energy and money saving products ranging from standby savers and energy wizards to basic insulation and efficient boiler jackets, whilst carrying out the requested standard repair and maintenance work.

The CNRS is designed to generate savings for tenants and social landlords on their energy bills as well as reduce carbon emissions of up to one tonne per household.  Morrison also assesses grant options and provides advice on energy and environmental strategies, including waste management, environmental impact, and energy usage, and has an information pack for tenants on standby modes, energy efficient products, thermostat control, recycling and low heat wash cycles.

Impact

  • 30 empty properties in Sefton were refurbished and fitted with CNRS packs before tenants moved in
  • The installation of energy saving products has offset and in some cases, completely eliminated the carbon footprint of the repair call out visit
  • Morrison energy saving products could save around one tonne of carbon per year and between £150 - £750 off a tenant’s utility bills
