Northstone builds impact in the community

The business issue

Northstone (NI) Ltd is the largest construction and building materials group in Northern Ireland. Northstone (NI) Ltd has several divisions, each focusing on a particular sector of the market including Farrans Construction and CUBIS Industries.

Northstone (NI) Ltd is part of CRH Plc, the largest listed company in Ireland and has 34 fixed locations and 70 construction sites across the province. However, in spite of significant resources dedicated to improving resources, recent years has seen the continuing improvement in health and safety performance achieved slowing and level off. Senior managers were seeking an initiative that would act as a catalyst to improve safety standards by greater employee commitment and involvement.

What Northstone (NI) Ltd did

Northstone (NI) Ltd formed a strategic partnership with the Simon Community to promote and encourage safer workplaces across the company while at the same time addressing homelessness in Northern Ireland. The initiative meant that the Simon Community would benefit from a sizeable donation for every accident free quarter across the company’s stakeholder locations.

Impact

  • Over the last two years, £393,000 was donated to the Simon Community
  • In 2007/08, £181,000 was used to furnished a 15 bed temporary accommodation shelter in Londonderry
  • In 2008/09, £188,000 was donated to fund services for young people in two of its Belfast sites
  • Any additional money received in 2009/10 will allow the expansion of the harm reduction services across NI
  • 11 stakeholder locations across NI with zero accidents for 2007/08 and 2009/10 which equals over 7 million hours worked without a lost time accident in a two year period
  • Greater motivation amongst employees to work more safely in order to address homelessness in NI
