Recycling heat saves £s

“We take great pride in our environmental performance and continuously strive for further improvement in innovative ways.”

Tracing its roots back to 1943, Moy Park is Northern Ireland’s largest food processing company and one of Europe’s leading poultry companies. The business offers a range of fresh, high quality locally farmed chicken and complementary convenience food products to retail and foodservice customers across Europe.

Based in Craigavon, Dungannon and Ballymena, it also operates in England, France and the Netherlands.

What Moy Park did

Last year, Moy Park consumed in excess of 250 million litres of warm water at its Dungannon site. Warm water has numerous important uses including defeathering birds, crate washing, factory cleaning and hand washing.

As part of an ongoing programme of investment to reduce its environmental impact, £85,000 was authorised for the installation of a new heat recovery system. This system recovers heat normally wasted to atmosphere from the site’s largest refrigeration system to preheat warm water. This ‘free’ energy reduces the amount of fuel burnt and subsequently reduces the quantity of pollutants being discharged into the atmosphere.

Connected to a site-wide monitoring package, it enables ongoing assessment of water flows, temperatures and alerts staff of any faults.

Impact

  • £150k saved through oil usage reduction
  • £20k saved in carbon emissions levy reduction
