Sainsbury's - Skills Pledge

“We are passionate at Sainsbury’s about the skills agenda, and believe that qualifications link directly into the great development we offer our colleagues every day, to ensure we remain a great place to work and can serve our customers better every day”

Steven Davis Head of Retail Resourcing and Training

Sainsbury’s was one of the first fifty businesses to sign the Government’s Skills Pledge in June 2007.  Since then, they have been working hard to implement their strategy against the commitments they have made.  This includes the expansion of their Apprenticeship programmes, to allow more colleagues to participate, including in new department areas, such as Meat and Fish counters.

Sainsbury's Goal

J Sainsbury plc is a leading UK food retailer with interests in financial services. It consists of Sainsbury's Supermarkets, Sainsbury's Local, Sainsbury's Online and Sainsbury's Bank. It employs 148,000 people.

Sainsbury's deliver an ever improving quality shopping experience for their customers with great products at fair prices. They aim to exceed customer expectations for healthy, safe, fresh and tasty food making their lives easier everyday.

In 2007, Sainsbury’s launched its Bakery Apprenticeship programme.  Rather than offer colleagues a generic Retail qualification, the company worked closely with Skillsmart Retail and their awarding body to design a programme fully mapped to their own training, which delivers both craft and product skills to new bakery colleagues.  The programme also delivers additional employability and managerial skills, to ensure colleagues are given a great start to their career in Sainsbury’s.  Many of their successful apprentices have now progressed to their Customer Trading Support positions within their stores.  Sainsbury’s programmes are not restricted by funding age mechanisms, and are instead open to all.

Sainsbury’s will also be introducing a Skills for Life solution, to help colleagues across the whole of the business improve their Literacy and Numeracy skills.  This will be self selecting and confidential, so that colleagues can learn at their own pace and anywhere they choose to.

Finally, they are mapping their ‘Steps to success’ training, which all colleagues complete when joining and working within Sainsbury’s stores, to the national occupational standards at Level 2.  This will allow colleagues to complete their business as usual training, whilst also completing a fully mapped national qualification.
