The company recognises the importance of energy management in its maintenance contracts, especially as its sites often cater for thousands of staff and pupils. It regularly monitors performance at all sites and uses the data to benchmark and set targets.

What H & J Martin did

To make savings for one client - Duncreggan Student Village - its project delivery team developed a strategic action plan of energy efficient measures. These included replacing 22 gas boilers with 11 more efficient ones and motivating occupants to change their behaviour through awareness raising campaigns, encouraging students to save energy. Future actions will include installing solar heating panels and switching to a green energy provider.

H & J Martin has invested in a thermal imaging camera which analyses heat loss and water damage by taking a simple thermographic image of the building. This enables specific action to be taken on buildings at the root of a problem which in turn brings huge savings.

Impact

  • • A 37.9% reduction in energy consumption for Duncreggan Student Village and a 25.8% reduction in cost will lead to savings of approximately £22,000
  • Thermal imaging survey results saved one client £52,000 in roof repairs
