Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Limited (SITL) – Generation 21

Merrill Lynch Award for Education supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery’s education programme ‘Generation 21 – Competency Management the Long Term Approach’ focuses specifically on raising the achievement of young people in Lincolnshire with particular emphasis on Lincoln city.  The programme provides opportunities for young people to link science, technology, engineering and mathematics into real-world situations in an engineering environment.

Processes

All ‘Generation 21’ activities are operated in partnership with local schools and universities, thus ensuring that they equip young people with appropriate knowledge and skills for their future and raise their aspirations and academic achievement, creating a larger pool of potential candidates from which to recruit.

As part of the ‘Generation 21’ programme, SITL has supported three schools in the locality in achieving Specialist School Status; and, in response to the need for more women in engineering since 2003, SITL has annually operated a ‘Females into Industry Challenge’ in collaboration with Lincoln College.

The primary objectives of the programme are to:

  • Sustain and enhance the reputation of the company.
  • Support and develop SITL staff in their professional and personal development.
  • Contribute to the long-term economic health of the region.
  • Demonstrate a responsible approach to society and to encourage a climate of innovation in line with their business.

Impact

  • Forty-eight of SITL’s employees are currently acting as Science and Engineering Ambassadors, playing a vital role in supporting the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education initiative in Lincolnshire.
  • Since 2003 there has been a 30 per cent increase in the number of applicants for the Advanced Apprenticeship programme.
  • Twenty two per cent of the 2003 group of females have applied for positions on the SITL Advanced Apprenticeship programme.
  • Raising aspirations has resulted in one partner school’s being invited to join the ‘Most Improved Schools Club’ with a 25 per cent increase in grades A* to C over the last three years.
