Collaborative Action for Tiger 11

Pro Bono legal help has been critical in making a good idea into a reality. We have had fantastic help from Wrigleys and DLA Piper. I am very impressed with both firms' commitment to put something back into the community and immensely grateful for their help.

Firms from the West Yorkshire ProHelp group worked together with Leeds Ahead and Tiger 11, the community development trust for Beeston and Holbeck, to develop a community enterprise centre in the area.

Tiger 11 is based in the heart of Beeston and Holbeck which is ranked in the bottom 2% of the Index of Multiple Deprivation. It was founded by Jeremy Morton a local resident, who worked tirelessly with other residents to establish the Community Development Trust.

Through West Yorkshire ProHelp DLA Piper and Wrigleys solicitors helped Tiger 11 come to fruition. DLA Piper assisted with work on tenancy agreements that the Community Development Trust will use with its tenants.

Wrigleys solicitors provided help with setting out the legal structure for the centre. They provided a very clear overview of the issues around incorporation and helped Tiger 11 to convert from a Company Limited by Guarantee to an Industrial & Provident Society. This legal structure allows Tiger 11 to build up a membership in the community through the sale of £1 shares.

Leeds Local Economic Growth Initiative (LEGI) plans five of these centres, called Catalyst centres, but Tiger 11 is the first of its kind. The centre will house business units for entrepeneurial start ups, a community centre and a cafe/bar. It’s thanks to the collaborative action that the businesses put in, that Tiger 11 is now in a position to provide an incredibly valuable resource to the local community.

Impact

  • Beeston and Holbeck now have an invaluable community resource which will provide residents with support and facilities otherwise unavailable.
  • The business units on a lease of £1 means more business start ups, encouraging social regeneration.
