Triangle Housing Association carry out ground breaking research into social inclusion

One quarter of tenants had only one friend and one in five had none

Triangle Housing AssociationSocial Inclusion Report

Triangle Housing association has been providing support for vulnerable people in Northern Ireland for almost 30 years. The organisation take a holistic approach to the care of their tenants and so decided they needed to carry out a study to assess their levels of social inclusion.

This ground breaking study, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, researched the extent of social isolation experienced by tenants in various forms of supported accommodation provided by a range of agencies throughout Northern Ireland.

The report produced some disturbing results regarding the extent to which people are isolated from the community. However, the report also investigated ways of overcoming the barriers to inclusion to enable people with a learning disability to become more socially integrated in their local communities.

Triangle in partnership with the University of Ulster took the research one step further in November 2007 when they launched an interactive CD-Rom / DVD staff training resource. It is hoped the CD-Rom will be used as a practical and effective tool in making social inclusion a reality for people with a learning disability. Copies of this toolkit are available from Triangle Housing Association.
