Ulster Bank makes MoneySense

The business issue

Founded in 1836, Ulster Bank, a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, is one of Ireland’s leading banking and financial services organisations.

Employing 5k people and serving approx 1.9m customers throughout Ireland, it has 248 branches, 59 business banking offices and 1261 non-charging ATMs, a presence at a local level in every county in Ireland. Ulster Bank has a strong commitment to supporting its customers, employees and local communities. What Ulster Bank did

Ulster Bank believes is has a responsibility to be proactive in financial education and that managing money is a crucial life skill.

MoneySense is Ulster Bank’s primary corporate responsibility programme and aims to:

  • Deliver relevant financial learning to a wide audience including students, young adults, employees and customers
  • Offer Ulster Bank staff the opportunity for personal skills development
  • Provide opportunities to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders interested in financial education
  • Position Ulster Bank at the forefront of personal financial education and make MoneySense the most widely used corporate financial education resource in Ireland.

MoneySense for schools is an online financial education developed by teachers and experts, it teaches 11-18 year olds about saving, budgeting, borrowing and setting up a small business and prepares them for life as independent adults.

It has guidance and lesson plans and can be delivered independently by teachers and there are also 100 Ulster Bank volunteers supporting the teachers in delivery. The volunteer’s training is bespoke for the programme and is delivered by Young Enterprise Northern and Junior Achievement. 

Impact

  • 100 Ulster Bank volunteers actively delivering Money Sense in classrooms
  • 2k pupils have received Money Sense lessons from Ulster Bank volunteers
  • 300 teachers are currently being supported to deliver ‘Economic well-being and financial capability’ as part of the National Curriculum
