United Utilities, winner of Lancaster University Management School Award for Leadership for Sustainability

Sustainability leadership is crucial to United Utilities, a business which relies on natural resources to deliver services.

The vision of the newly formed environment and sustainability team is to become “the best at protecting and enhancing the environment” by 2020. A Corporate Responsibility Panel populated by senior leaders has been established and sustainability measures have been incorporated into business performance scorecards forming part of every employee’s bonus. 95% of employees have at least one climate change measure, aligning individual with business objectives.

United Utilities' approach is to reduce impacts in areas such as carbon emissions, waste disposal to landfill, raw material demand, pollution and biodiversity. The programme is also targeted at generating business value – resource efficiency, risk management, resource protecting, cost avoidance and reduction.

Impact

  • Since 2006, the pump efficiency programme has saved 25million KWh of electricity, £1.4million and 13,000 tonnes CO2e.
  • Sustainable waste management approach has reduced the amount of excavated material to landfill by over 90 per cent, and eliminated sludge to landfill, against a Government target of 50 per cent
  • 79% of graduates recently joining the company cited approach to the environment as a key reason for applying
  • 13% of the business’ total energy needs are now provided by the renewable energy we generate ourself, with a value of £4.5million
  • Environmental education programme delivers classes to over 10,000 students each year, helping support schools in their achievement of eco-school status and UU’s aims on water efficiency.
