Wates Wales Environment Award - Highly Commended

Regional Award

A family-owned business with 113 years of history, Wates Living Space employs 824 people and is one of the UK’s leading affordable housing contractors and is driven by social purpose. In Wales, they operate in both the North and South through their offices in Cardiff and Wrexham.

Reducing carbon emissions and managing waste are a key part of their corporate responsibility strategy. They are committed to achieving a 10% year-on-year reduction in carbon emissions and aim to eliminate all non hazardous waste from landfill by the end of 2010.

Processes

Every Wates business unit has a sustainability champion to focus their thinking, coordinate activities and share best practice. Each Wates office also operates its own environmental plan, green travel plan and an Environmental Management System to minimise the impact of their activities.

Impact

  • They scored 91% in a recent IPSOS Mori employee engagement survey, with their corporate responsibility identified as a significant issue in driving employee engagement; increasing from 60% in 2007 to 78% in 2009.
  • In 2009 their Target Zero programme showed that 95% of all waste produced is now diverted from landfill, up from 53% at the start of the programme four years ago.
  • Over 2,000 hours of waste training and development has been provided internally.
  • 8 businesses within their supply chain developed fully operational environmental management systems and met the requirements of ISO14001. These businesses were also able to make approximately £4,000 in cost savings each.
