'The Climate Challenge’ briefing note sets out ten position statements under the headings of ‘climate change and responsible business’, ‘the role of markets’, and ‘the role of government’.  Key positions include:

  • Businesses that recognise the opportunities that climate change presents will be best placed to succeed in the current economic climate and in the future low carbon economy
  • We advocate businesses taking voluntary action now to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through a 6 step approach outlined through the Prince’s May Day Network.  As a minimum, all businesses should be measuring the CO2 emitted from their use of energy.
  • We advocate the mandatory disclosure of a business’ GHG emissions.
  • We support the introduction of government guidance on the measurement of GHG emissions for businesses by 1 October 2009.
  • Consideration should be given to what additional free or subsidised support is required to enable businesses to measure and reduce their GHG emissions, prior to the introduction of mandatory reporting. This may demand further investment in organisations that have been set up to support businesses through the transition to a low carbon economy.  Additional support may be required for SMEs in particular.
