May Day Carbon UK report - a survey on the 2010 Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC)

Business in the Community commissioned this research to find out how prepared the UK’s businesses really are for climate change, and for the impending regulations that the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) legislation will bring in April 2010.

With a foreword by Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community and Sir Nigel Knowles Joint Chief Executive, DLA Piper, the results of this survey show that UK plc is ill prepared for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC).

A survey by Opinion Matters of 1,695 workers from UK businesses, including 266 decision makers (senior managers, directors and board members), finds that awareness of CRC is poor and that only a minority of organisations are acting to reduce carbon emissions.

The survey found that:

  • there is poor awareness of CRC;
  • most organisations are not yet thinking about the impact of climate change;
  • carbon reducing initiatives are limited;
  • organisations need help to meet CRC;
  • few have taken the first steps towards reducing emissions;
  • there is no consistency in assigning responsibility for green policies;
  • engaging with climate change is not seen to have commercial benefit.

This survey was commissioned to coincide with the Prince's May Day Summit 2009 - the UK's largest gathering of businesses committed to taking action on climate change.
