Businesses are still operating in extremely difficult circumstances, despite the UK economy officially emerging from recession. Redundancy and restructuring, including site closures, have become a necessity as some employers are forced to reduce overheads in order to survive.
The key lessons of responsible downsizing are often cited as transparency and advance planning. However, there is little information available to companies on how to do this in a way that takes the range of impacts into account.
This briefing note attempts to redress this balance. It offers companies ways to understand how restructuring and downsizing affects the wider community and local economy; how and who to engage with; and gives examples of where other companies, in similar circumstances, have left a positive legacy within the community. Key considerations are set out at the end of the briefing in checklist form.
