Office workers dish up meals for the homeless

‘Experiencing life on the front line as a volunteer has really raised our awareness of the issues faced by the homeless.

Six employees, from the Southampton office of chartered accountants Grant Thornton UK LLP; swapped their day jobs to volunteer at a local homeless charities day centre. The day, organised as part of Business in the Community’s Employee Volunteering programme, saw 85 hot meals dished up by the volunteers at no cost to the centres beneficiaries thanks to a generous subsidy donated by the firm.

Tasks undertaken by the volunteers were a world away from the usual day job, experiencing life on the front line, supporting the centre’s staff. From preparing and serving up warm lunches to handling general enquiries at the centres reception the staff soon got a feel for the difference that the services offered by Two Saints make to the city’s homeless.

Dominic Tunks, Grant Thornton UK LLP said ‘Experiencing life on the front line as a volunteer has really raised our awareness of the issues faced by the homeless. We were delighted to be able to help the centre’s staff at the day centre which is located only around the corner from our offices.’

Louise Barnden, Two Saints’ Chief Executive said “The support from the staff at Grant Thornton was fantastic for all of our staff, volunteers and service users at our Day Centre. The centre is a vital resource for the local community, helping people to move from a life on the streets back to independent living. We rely on both individual and corporate volunteers to help us run our services and we are extremely grateful to Grant Thornton for their help”

Keen to ensure the wider workforce were able to support Two Saints at Christmas Grant Thornton UK LLP signed up to the 2011 Business in the Community Christmas Gift Appeal. Donating everyday food commodities the donations helped support the homeless move on to independent living over Christmas.
