Bridging the Gap between Business and Social Enterprise

Wednesday 14th September 2011 saw the first ‘Our Bridge’ event take place in the South East region. Sponsored by Jobsite UK the event was attended by 50 delegates allowing local businesses to learn about the world of social enterprise whilst exploring how their business could support one in their local community.

Social enterprises are present across the UK supporting their local economies whilst trading for an explicit social purpose. A diverse and inspiring mix of local social enterprises and charities were present at the ‘Our Bridge’ event including Music Fusion, So Fair and Sparks. Delegates were able to see some of the inspirational work undertaken by these local organisations during formal presentations and over a networking lunch.

Keynote Anna Springbett, National Social Investment Manager, BITC addressed delegates on the role their business can play in supporting local social enterprises.

The presentation was followed by speeches from some of the region’s most inspirational social enterprises including The Soco Music Project, The Legacy Project and Music Fusion.  Delegates were treated to a spectacular performance by the Urban Vocal Group, a local Hampshire based group of young singers formed in 2008.

Following a networking lunch delegates were addressed by Conroy Williams, Programme Manager of the Hampshire School for Social Entrepreneurs. The one year programme aims to bring together committed, passionate social entrepreneurs who have a good idea to improve their communities and the world around them. The programme which offers a practical as opposed to academic perspective introduced two of their most successful social entrepreneurs.

Jinx Prowse, CEO of Music Fusion and event organiser said ‘The day aimed to ‘bridge’ the gap between social enterprise and business. I was genuinely surprised to see so many public and private sector representatives in attendance. The ‘Our Bridge’ event goes to demonstrate that business and charities can gain a huge amount from working together.’

As a result of the first ‘Our Bridge’ event it is hoped businesses will further understand the role they can play in supporting their local communities.  Business in the Community will be working with members following the event to ensure pledges become promises! With thanks to Langstone Technology Park for hosting this event.
