Susan retired in 2001 after 37 years of teaching in Bristol schools, her last post was as headmistress of The Red Maids' School in Westbury-on-Trym.

Susan is a governor of Bristol Cathedral School, a volunteer guide at the Lifeskills Centre, a member of Bristol Cathedral Council and vice president of both the Girl Guides in Bristol and South Gloucestershire and The Red Maids' Society.

Susan is also a magistrate on the Bristol Bench and a trustee of Bagshaw Birkin Educational Trust.
