Managing and measuring product stewardship performance

Companies can manage and measure their performance on product stewardship through the UK’s leading business-led, self-assessed corporate environmental benchmark – the Environment Index.

Companies’ performance on product stewardship is assessed on whether they:

  • have introduced environmentally responsible products
  • have influenced their customers to use their products in a more responsible manner
  • have formally confirmed environmental stewardship as a corporate requirement
  • can demonstrate how environmental considerations have influenced strategic decision making

Companies complete the Environment Index by submitting their answers to an online survey. They then receive an Individual Feedback Report, allowing them to analyse gaps in their performance on product stewardship and compare their scores with peers.

Many companies have already used the Environment Index to benchmark their performance on product stewardship. Over the past 10 years, companies’ have increased their average ‘environmental stewardship’ scores from 61% to 89%, and in 2005, 92% of companies confirmed that environmental stewardship was a corporate requirement.

Further information is available on how the Environment Index benchmarks performance across a range of other environmental areas, including resource efficiency, climate change and corporate environmental strategy.
