The categories available in the Awards for Excellence 2008 are listed below.

Impact on Society Awards

Impact on Society Award in association with Tomorrow's Company – for companies that are improving their business and their overall impact on society – in the marketplace, the workplace, the environment and the community – through leadership and integration of responsible business practices. Please note that this award is only open to platinum band companies from the CR Index 2007. Eligible companies will be invited to apply in March 2008.

Impact on Society Award for a Small Company in association with the Institute of Directors - as above but for SMEs.  This category is open only open to small and medium sized businesses that are independent trading organisations (i.e. with no parent company and employing no more than 250 people or the full time equivalent).

Special Awards

BT Total Talent Award supported by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills – recognising companies that are taking a strategic approach to recognising and developing talent and skills both within the workplace and the community.

Northern Foods Rural Action Award supported by the Commission for Rural Communities– for companies who work to create sustainable rural communities

Marketplace Impact

HBOS Responsible Marketing Award in Association with The Marketing Society – for a company that has addressed opportunities or concerns around its products or services through responsible marketing, and by so doing, has achieved a positive impact on society

John Lewis and Waitrose Supply Chain Award – recognising companies that can demonstrate innovation and impact in working with suppliers to improve corporate responsibility across supply chains.

Tata Consultancy Services Marketplace Innovation Award – for a company that has innovated to create new, or to modify existing products or services, to meet social or environmental needs.

Workplace Impact

Norfolk County Services Skills for Life Award supported by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, in association with Investors in People – recognising companies in the UK that support employees in the development of their essential literacy, numeracy and language skills in the workplace.

Towers Perrin Healthy Workplace Award supported by the Department of Health, in association with the Health and Safety Executive – recognising companies that are improving the health and wellbeing of their employees.

Environment Impact

Barclays Environmental Leadership Award supported by the CBI – for companies demonstrating leadership and improved impact by embedding environmental strategy into core business processes.  Only companies publicly ranked in the Platinum or Gold bands of the Environment Index 2007 are eligible to enter this Award.   Companies will be invited to apply in March 2008.

Lafarge Cement UK Eco-efficiency Award supported by Envirowise – for companies taking a strategic, comprehensive and innovative approach to reducing resource use and waste.

Man Group International Climate Change Award - for companies taking a strategic, comprehensive and innovative approach to tackling climate change.

Community Impact

BUPA Healthy Communities Award supported by the Department of Health – recognising company community programmes that work with voluntary and/or public sectors to improve the health and wellbeing of UK communities.

Merrill Lynch Education Award supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families – recognising company community programmes that raise the achievement of young people through building sustainable partnerships with schools to the benefit of pupils aged 5-19 years in the UK.

Wates Employability Award  – recognising company community programmes that have effectively removed barriers to employment, resulting in disadvantaged people finding jobs.

Power in Partnership Award for groups of two or more companies that are having an impact on society through collaborative action

Leadership Awards

The Marks & Spencer Sieff Award - for individuals based in the community who have successfully collaborated with business to benefit society.

The Prince’s Ambassador Award – for individuals whose leadership and commitment to responsible business has resulted in changes and improvements inside their own company and who have also inspired other organisations to take action.
