History of the CR Index
Business in the Community launched its Environment Index in 1996 to help companies benchmark their environmental management and performance.

Index process
From completing the survey to receiving their feedback reports, CR Index participants go through a process of internal gap analysis and action planning for continuous improvement.

Benefits of participation
In 2002, six years of results from Business in the Community’s Environment Index were analysed. Results showed performance in the Index could be used as an indicator of management quality.

Participation in the CR Index involves completing an online survey and assessing strategy, management processes and performance in key areas

Results of the CR Index, including full rankings, sector analyses and key trends, are published each year in May.

External verification
For the last three years, Business in the Community has commissioned Arthur D Little, the global management consulting group, to provide external verification of the Index process.

CR Index goes GLOBAL
The CR Index has been running in Australia and New Zealand by the St James Ethics Centre. It has also been launched in Greece where it will be put forward by the Institute of Social Responsibility based in Athens.
