Awards for Excellence

The Awards for Excellence are the UK’s most influential awards recognising responsible business. Companies from the East Midlands have a great track record of success and we are determined that the work being done by businesses across the region receives its due recognition.


East Midlands Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner 2008

On the 5th June 2008 the East Midlands Region celebrated their Big Tick Awards at the University of Derby.  The region won seven ‘Big Tick’ Awards, and gained 11 Big Tick re-accreditations.  The East Midlands also awarded locally the following awards:

  • Regional CARES Awards
  • Regional Sustainability Award
  • Regional Pro-help Award
  • Regional Community Award

Award winners in all categories are listed below.

David Cooke, Regional Director of Business in the Community, congratulated the businesses that took part in the Awards for Excellence 2008 and praised their work in nurturing the talent of individuals in the workplace, in the community or through marketplace and environmental innovation and leadership.

Joining the event in virtual form was business in the Community president HRH Prince Charles, who nominated Brian Stein, Group Chief Executive of Samworth Brothers, as his Business in the Community Ambassador for the East Midlands for his community development work in Leicestershire. 

Also awarded for her outstanding work in the community was Brenda Thomas, Project Manager Nottinghamshire Education Business Alliance, who won the Marks & Spencer SIEFF Award. This award is for individuals based in the community who have successfully collaborated with business to benefit society. 

Guests at this year’s awards ceremony were entertained by some of the region’s talented young people, with performances from the Blue Bell Hill Primary School in Nottingham and the All-Stars Carnival Troupe from Hyson Green Youth Club. During the evening the East Midlands were also entertained by Incognito Artists who surprised guests with their Opera and ‘Rat Pack’ Dance routine, dazzling audiences with unique, unforgettable and stunning performances.   

Continuing the theme of 'Talent' the East Midlands Guest Speaker was Dan Salcedo Head Men’s Coach for the British Triathlon Team.

Sponsors of this years event was Aggregate Industries, with the support of Shoosmiths Solicitors, University of Derby, Royal Mail, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, MediaMaker and Experian.

BUPA Healthy Communities Award supported by the Department of Health – recognising company community programmes that work with voluntary and/or public sectors to improve the health and wellbeing of UK communities.

Northern Foods Rural Action Award supported by the Commission for Rural Communities – for companies who work to create sustainable rural communities.
