Business Action on Skills in the East Midlands
Business in the Community has engaged hundreds of businesses over the past 5 years in the Skills campaign. The programme works with businesses to help them identify how improving Maths and English skills will bring about business and employees benefits. It also celebrates businesses who have implemented a successful workplace learning strategy.
Improving workplace skills is important in the East Midlands because:
- The region has the second highest proportion of people with no qualifications of all the English regions. Specifically there are higher proportions of people with no qualifications in Leicester and Nottingham Cities, and also in districts in Northamptonshire and Derbyshire.
- Larger proportions of younger people (16-19 year olds) have no qualifications in the East Midlands compared to the UK. This means that higher levels of young people are going into the workplace without qualifications.
The employee benefits include having a chance to improve or brush up on their skills at work, being more able to progress their career within the business, manage their personal finances more effectively, read a story to a child and increased confidence levels.
