Lincolnshire Businesses for Breakfast

The Lincolnshire Businesses for Breakfast charity has being created to offer every primary and junior school in Lincoln funding to help them set up or sustain an out of school hours Breakfast Club. This rewarding and worthwhile initiative has been led by local companies including the Lincolnshire Co-operative, Jackson Building Centres and Andrew  & Co LLP, with the support of Business in the Community, Lincolnshire County Council and Children’s Links.

What the breakfast clubs do

The main purpose of the Breakfast Clubs is to provide children with a healthy breakfast, which is proven to help their concentration, attendance and social interaction – which in turn helps raise their educational attainment. Arriving from 7.45am onwards, the children learn important life skills while they eat such as table manners and interacting with their peers.

The Breakfast Clubs also provide a number of other benefits such as integrating families with the schools and helping to educate children on the benefits of a healthy diet and nutrition. The early start for the children also frees up some of their parents’ time.

For Julie Harrison, Head Teacher at Usher Junior School, keeping the scheme going is a necessity:

For many parents, finding affordable childcare that enables them to be focussed and in work on time is a nightmare. A breakfast club fulfils both these essential requirements whilst providing stimulating activities and opportunities to socialise and play. In terms of securing economic wellbeing for our citizens and the city as a whole, breakfast clubs are invaluable!”

Help support the Breakfast Clubs

To keep this initiative going in Lincolnshire, we need the financial support of local businesses to cover food costs. Many of our schools have recently set up breakfast clubs but they are all facing huge financial pressures in trying to keep them running, with many facing closure. Other schools wish to set them up but do not have the funds.

We are asking larger businesses to consider donating £2300 pa (the cost of supporting one school) or £1000 and perhaps smaller companies to find £500 pa – although any amount would be most welcome and a commitment for a 3 year period would help us enormously.

Our aim is to raise around £47,000 pa, every penny of which will go on food.
