Education

In the North West, Business in the Community is look to create tomorrow's competitive workforce by inspiring and engaging business in the region to work in partnership with schools to improve young people's achievement.

Launched in 2006, Business Class is an innovative Business in the Community (BITC) project which brings together schools and businesses to help transform secondary education in the North West.

Business Class

Businesses are able to join a local cluster in the North West and are partnered with a single school for a minimum of three years.   Using the specially designed Needs Assessment Toolkit, partners work together to review the school’s particular challenges and to identify opportunities for the business to provide tailored support.
Businesses can consider which aspects of school life they can most effectively support. It is reccommended that businesses provide assistance in the areas where they have the greatest experience and where the business benefits are most explicit. Specifically, most businesses are able to provide valuable input to schools in the areas of employability, enterprise and leadership and management.

  • Some of the North West’s LEAs are amongst the best in England (Trafford, Warrington) whilst others are amongst the worst (Manchester, Knowsley)
  • SATs results at age 11 are better in the North West than in any other English region
  • Educational outcomes at secondary level in the North West region are below the English average
  • Children in some areas of the North West face significant social and economic disadvantage

Where we work

To maximise the positive impact of business engagement on young people, Business Class is focussing activity on a number of geographical priority areas: Manchester, Liverpool, Knowsley, Salford and Burnley. BITC aims to create partnerships between local businesses and secondary schools in these five target areas.
