The concept of corporate responsibility has become much more widely recognised and accepted since Business in the Community Northern Ireland produced its last strategic plan in 2003.
Increased consumer awareness of and interest in corporate behaviour coupled with media concentration on issues such as climate change, business ethics and fair trade have led to an awakening of the corporate conscience. This is good news for organisations like ours, committed to changing and improving business behaviour for the benefit of society.
Looking towards 2011 over the period of this strategic plan, we believe that the behaviour of organisations will continue to be scrutinisedby media, governments, consumers and competitors alike.
Business in the Community’s role in challenging and inspiring companies will continue to grow in that time and we believe we will be called upon increasingly by our members to support them in meeting their responsibilities to a growing list of stakeholders in the 21st Century.
In Northern Ireland specifically, the restoration of the NI Assembly in May 2007 has given renewed hope of a more peaceful and prosperous shared future to all citizens and that can only be good for business and good for society as a whole.
We look forward to the next three years with renewed optimism and a belief that now really is ‘our time’. As we approach our 20th anniversary in 2009, we are confident that the work we have been doing to inspire businesses about the benefits of a responsible approach to doing business is paying off—forcompanies and society alike.
