Business in the Community is a unique and forward thinking organisation and is at the forefront of many innovative and dynamic corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaigns.  Business in the Community has approximately 360 employees. Our Head Office is based at Shepherdess Walk, London, N1, and additionally we have regional offices throughout the UK and Northern Ireland.  We are made up of a diverse range of people from all walks of life, and with experience in a wide range of sectors, private, public and charity. Business in the Community has been an  Investor in People since 1999.

Applying for a job

We do not currently use an application form, applications for our vacancies should be made in the form of a full cv and supporting letter outlining how your skills and experience meet the person specification for the post. Address and contact details to send your application are listed with each vacancy.  Please note that as a charity we are not able to pay any expenses associated with attending an interview.

Employee Community Involvement

Business in the Community recognises the significant contribution of employee volunteering to both individuals’ personal development and the communities benefiting from their time and skills.  It encourages employees to participate in its own programmes, such as Reading, Number and Language Partners, job coaching and Cares Team Challenges, and allows staff up to two days volunteering time each year.  In addition, it matches time to employees who volunteer with organisations and issues of their own choice in their own time.  Business in the Community runs a Payroll Giving scheme to enable employees to give money every month to their chosen charity and gain an extra 10% supplement from the Inland Revenue.

Employee benefits

Annual leave

Business in the Community offers employees 25 days annual leave each year, and our holiday year runs from January to December. This rises on a sliding scale to a maximum of 30 days after 10 years service.

Employees can also "buy" more holiday entitlement or "sell" days unused.

Pensions

Business in the Community operates a Group Personal Pension scheme which employees can join after three months' service. Business in the Community will contribute up to 5% of salary providing the individual contributes a minimum of 2.5%.   For more information go to our pension provider's website »

Loans

Business in the Community offers interest-free Season Ticket Travel Loans to all staff. We will also pay 20% towards this loan for staff who earn under £20,000. Staff can also apply for a similar loan to purchase a bike.

Life assurance

Payment of four times the annual salary will be paid to the estate of any individual in the event of death whilst they are employed at Business in the Community.

Health and Safety

It is the policy of Business in the Community to maintain safe and healthy working conditions, equipment and systems of work for all its employees, and to provide such information, training and supervision as they need for this purpose. Business in the Community also accepts its responsibilities for the health and safety of others who may be affected by its activities.

The primary responsibility for safety rests with line management. We all, however, have an individual responsibility for our own health and safety, for that of our colleagues and for anyone else who may be affected by our acts or omissions. We must all work together to maintain and improve health and safety standards.

The allocation of duties for safety matters and the particular arrangements which Business in the Community will make to implement the policy are available on the intranet.
The policy will be kept up to date, particularly to reflect changes in Business in the Community. To ensure this, the policy will be reviewed every year.

Business in the Community has a legal obligation to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all employees at work. 

Each manager has a duty to take care of the health, safety and welfare of their staff and to report and investigate any accident or incident to help prevent a recurrence. 

Business in the Community requires all its staff (and secondees and consultants) to co-operate in establishing and maintaining safe and healthy working conditions and to avoid any action which may adversely affect the health, safety and welfare of themselves or others. 

In fulfilling its obligations, Business in the Community will:
• Provide adequate control of health and safety risks arising from our work activities
• Consult with our employees on matters affecting their health and safety
• Provide and maintain safe plant and equipment
• Ensure safe handling and use of hazardous substances
• Provide appropriate information, instruction and supervision for employees relating to health and safety issues
• Ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks and to give them adequate training
• Prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health
• Maintain a safe and healthy working environment
• Review and revise this policy as necessary at regular intervals

This policy applies as appropriate to visitors who may be present at Business in the Community sites or to others who may be affected by Business in the Community activities.
