Chris Hyman CBE

Chris was born and brought up in South Africa where he graduated from Natal University in Durban, with a B.Comm (Acc) degree and PgHDip (Acc).  From there he went on to qualify as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen, which created the opportunity to participate in a sponsored work placement transferring to London to work with Ernst & Young.  He spent five years in South Africa and a further five in the UK gaining valuable knowledge as an auditor of businesses across many sectors, including serving as Assistant Director of the CBI in the UK.  He later joined Serco.

Until his retirement from the Board of Directors at the end of 2013, he was the Group CEO of Serco, one of Britain’s largest companies, with an annual turnover in excess of £5bn and more than 120,000 employees working in over 40 countries.  Prior to becoming Group CEO, Chris held the positions of Divisional Finance Director, Group Company Secretary, Corporate Finance Director and Group Finance Director.

During his tenure, revenue more than trebled to around £5bn, with profits up over 550% to £302m.  The company grew from around 23,000 people to over 122,000 globally.  He led the international expansion of the company, taking Serco into 20 new countries.  In 2008, Serco entered the FTSE 100, having climbed over 70 places in the FTSE 250 Index since 2003.  He developed a strong set of Governing Principles and worked hard to ensure that Serco’s values remained consistent and valued by its customers, its people and all other stakeholders.

Chris holds a number of positions on the Boards of Charities and NGO’s, which include:

  • Board Member of Business in the Community (BITC)

  • Board Member of The Big Zoological Experiment

  • Trustee of Africa Foundation

  • Board Member of Royal Academy of Arts, Summer Ball organising Committee

  • Advisor to the President, Borneo Tropical Rainforest Trust

Other achievements

  • Appointed 2008 National Ambassador by the Prince of Wales for BITC

  • An Honorary Chartered Director of the Institute of Directors

  • Awarded Man of the Year at the GG2 Leadership and Diversity Awards

  • Awarded Lloyds TSB Jewel Award for Outstanding Achievement

  • In June 2010 was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to business and charity

Chris’ passions include travelling with his family, skiing, cycling, motor racing and music. He is married to Lianne and has two children.
