Roy took up his role at the head of Sonas CS, a specialist advisory company, in June 2018 having retired from his position as CEO of Belfast Harbour Commissioners. He joined Belfast Harbour Commissioners in 2005 following an eleven-year career as the head of the electronics companies Irlandus Circuits and Data Design Laboratories, initially as Managing Director and latterly as owner. Roy previously held positions with Rothmans International, Flexibox International and the Northern Ireland Quality Centre where he was the organisation’s first CEO. Roy has been involved as a non-executive in a range of organisations which currently include Ardmore Advertising, The Prince’s Trust, Business in the Community, and Belfast Boys’ Model Bursary Fund.
He is President Emeritus of the General Stevedoring Council, chairs the Diaspora initiative, NI Connections, and has served as a National Judge for the UK National Training Awards as well as serving on the Boards of the UK Major Ports Group (Deputy Chair), Invest Northern Ireland and Ulster University's Centre for Economic Policy. Roy was awarded the CBE in 2015 and is the inaugural winner of the US Ireland Council’s Cuchulain Award.
