This event will discuss the findings of the Mental Health at Work Report 2017 in relation to the public sector.

We all experience fluctuating levels of mental health, in the same way we do with physical health and our survey indicates that most of us experience poor mental health at some point in our lives. Mental health issues are complex and diverse. The spectrum can range from common mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety and depression, through to severe and enduring mental illness.

The Mental Health at Work survey 2017 highlighted a number of differences between public and private sector organisations in relation to mental health. Employees in the public sector are half as likely to face disciplinary action for disclosing a mental health issue. This could be the result of the fact that mental health issues due to work are both more prevalent in this sector and more widely discussed. Additionally, managers in the public sector are more likely (66%) to have managed an employee with mental health issues than the wider workforce (48%) and in the private sector (41%).

This event will present a unique chance for interested individuals to debate on how best to proceed in this space.

The event will begin with a review of the Mental Health at Work report findings and presentation from Danielle Wolman, Business in the Community’s Wellbeing Research and Policy Officer. This will be followed by two organisation specific case studies, Diane Rudge from the Department for Work and Pensions and Luis Guerra from Public Health England, this will finish with a joint Q&A session. Lastly there will be group discussion on solutions, problems and feedback.
