Britain’s rural communities continue to face significant challenges such as low commodity prices, lack of employment opportunities and limited access to resources. This year we are delighted to recognise those businesses which are helping to sustain rural Britain, ensuring it remains a viable place to live and work.

Tackling issues such as employment and farm safety as well as supporting community projects, the Finalists for the 2016 Samworth Brothers Rural Action Award are leading the way in addressing the challenges faced by our rural communities and setting examples of best practice for responsible business.

The Winner of this year’s Samworth Brothers Rural Action Award is NFU Mutual for their exceptional work tackling the critical issue of farm safety. A farmer is six times more likely to die in the workplace than a construction worker, NFU Mutual recognised this as a huge issue for society and in particular their customer base and therefore set up the Farm Safety Foundation. Through a targeted programme of education and training, NFU Mutual are raising awareness of this issue and helping reduce the number of accidents that take place on farm each year.

Their passion for increasing safety on farms is evident and clearly beneficial to their business as well as relevant to their customers. Through launching the Farm Safety Foundation, they are leading the way in highlighting this issue, and their ongoing financial commitment to the programme is extremely commendable.

NFU Mutual excelled with their passionate approach alongside a clear focus and an ambition that matches the scale of the challenge.
