John Varley

John Varley, Chairman of Marie Curie

John was appointed Barclays Group Chief Executive in September 2004 and retired on 31 December 2010, having been Deputy Chief Executive from October 2003. Prior to this, he was Finance Director. John joined the Group Executive Committee in September 1996 and was appointed an Executive Director of the Group in June 1998.  John was Senior Advisor to the Barclays Board Plc from 1 January 2011 to 1 October 2011.

John was a senior independent Non-Executive Director of Astra Zeneca PLC. Until June 2017, John was a Non-Executive Director on the Board of BlackRock, as well as Senior Independent Non-Executive Director of Rio Tinto. He was a member of the Provost and Fellows Committee at Eton College.  He was also a member of the Prince of Wales' Charitable Foundation.

He is Chair of Employment for Excluded Groups Leadership Team, and was the Chairman and Trustee of Marie Curie.

John was awarded the Prince of Wales’ Ambassador Award 2010 for his work with Business Action on Homelessness on 5 July 2010.

John is a father to two children.
