CityCo: Using experience of the Manchester attack experience to improve business continuity support across the city
- One of the largest training sessions of its type in Europe
CityCo is the city centre management company for Manchester and Salford. It helps to solve operational problems and make improvements. In the wake of the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena in 2017, the organisation ran a free counter-terrorism awareness business training session for all companies in the region. It was one of the largest sessions of its type to be delivered in Europe, and within two weeks of the initial incident.
“Following the attack at Manchester Arena we have seen just how important it is for the business community to share information and work together to help create resilient cities.”Vaughan Allen, Chief Executive, CityCo
Immediately after the attack, it was the job of CityCo and Manchester BID to communicate agreed messaging from its partners at the local authority, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU). Some business members had issues getting back into their properties, so CityCo provided them with remote working space at its offices on the day after the attack.
Since then it has continued to work on initiatives designed to build resilience in cities, helping companies continue to run, even in the event of disaster.
It runs its own training programmes focused on the specific needs of small businesses, giving guidance and advice. It also has a free-of-charge event space for GMP and the North West CTU, where it runs training and briefing sessions for companies and police operations.
Initially trained to deliver Project Griffin terrorism awareness training, CityCo is now geared up to support the Counter Terrorism Unit to reach smaller companies and teams in a way it was unable to do in the past due to resources.
