The beneficiary: Cotterstock Village Hall
Cotterstock Village Hall is the only community facility, apart from the church, and so has a wide range of uses and functions for the local residents. It is used as a meeting place for village events including regular weekly adult education classes such as local history and ballroom dancing lessons. It also provides a venue for the annual Harvest Supper, Village Fete and Bonfire Night. The Village Hall is the centre of village life.
The help we received from ProHelp was critical in achieving our objective and has saved us money, too. All we have to do now is raise the funds needed to complete the project and then we will be able to expand our activities.

PDG Architects Ltd was established in 1988 and provides architectural services to private, public and community sectors. It has built a reputation for providing a personal, efficient, quality-based service to clients, regardless of the size or nature of the project. PDG have been members of ProHelp since 2009 and over the years have supported several community and voluntary organisations with architectural advice.
The Cotterstock Village Hall Refurbishment Committee approached Peterborough ProHelp for help with a specification for major items to help with getting suitable quotes for the work to be undertaken.
The project was assigned to Paul Hutchings, Director at PDG Architects, who arranged a site visit with the Village Hall Refurbishment Committee to discuss their requirements and advise on the best way to proceed.
Paul produced a short report which outlined two possible options. One covered repairs to the existing internal structure, and the second a full replacement of the floor, along with an outline of a specification for upgrading the thermal insulation of the roof, with an indication of the likely cost.
He also advised on Building Regulations approval requirements, gave some suggestions of local builders who might be interested in quoting for the works.
All of this information will assist the Village Hall Refurbishment Committee when completing any grant applications, and gave them a better idea of how much they would need to raise to complete the project.
All in all PDG Architects gave six hours of their time free of charge to helping the Cotterstock Village Hall Refurbishment Committee, worth £900.00 - money that can now be channeled into the project instead.
Paul Hutchings said about the project:
“Being able to support a small community project like the Cotterstock Village Hall Refurbishment project goes a long way in terms of giving something back to the local community. This project benefits a small village but the residents will have peace of mind knowing that they won’t have to raise the extra money to cover professional fees on top of the refurbishment work. We are only too glad to help.”
