SUMMARY:Peer Learning Forum: Suppliers and Responsible Procurement
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Peer Learning Forum exploring ways in which organisations can support their suppliers to adopt responsible business practices.\n\n\nThis is a virtual event. \nAudience\nBusiness in the Community (BITC) members. Our peer learning forums are now open to all members who have advisory in their membership package. This particular event targets people managers\, line managers\, senior leaders and those with accountability for driving inclusion and wellbeing. \n\n\nAims and objectives of the event\nOrganisations are increasingly required to engage with suppliers to collect social and environmental performance data\, and to ensure suppliers are meeting certain standards. We know that it is not enough simply to develop a procurement strategy and expect all suppliers to adapt their practices overnight. Organisations need to consider ways in which they can support suppliers to meet the requirements\, and to understand the barriers suppliers may face. By taking this collaborative approach\, organisations face a better chance of meeting their own responsible business ambitions\, and creating an even greater positive impact through their supply chain. \nIn this Peer Learning Forum\, BITC will share tried and tested approaches which demonstrate effective ways of collaborating with suppliers including: \n\nHow to engage suppliers to discuss the importance of responsible procurement;\nHow to engage suppliers to understand challenges;\nCapturing insights and responding to these in approach to supplier engagement;\nMonitoring ongoing performance and adherence to a responsible procurement policy;\nWays to provide support for suppliers in meeting requirements.\n\n\n\nAbout Business in the Community’s Peer Learning Forums\nBITC’s Peer Learning Forums provide a confidential environment to discuss common issues\, solutions\, and good practice. There will be an emphasis on discussion and sharing experiences. \n\n\nBooking\, contact details and further information\n\nContact Annette Ettarh at BITC\, for any further questions.\n\n\nFull joining instructions will be sent before the event.\n\nFind out how your organisation can become a member of Business in the Community

SUMMARY:Peer Learning Forum: Psychological Safety
DESCRIPTION:Join this Peer Learning Forum to explore the key concepts of psychological safety and identify ways to create a psychologically safe environment at work.\n\n\nAudience\nOur Peer Learning Forums are now open to all Business in the Community (BITC) members who have advisory in their membership package. Hosted by our issue experts\, there are 20 forums a year\, covering a range of responsible business areas and enabling our members to discuss challenges\, solutions and ideas. \nWe particularly encourage those in a wellbeing\, health and safety\, EDI\, or HR role to attend this event. \nBackground\nPsychological safety is a team concept in which it’s OK to take risks\, to express ideas and concerns\, to speak up with questions\, and to admit mistakes — all without fear of negative consequences. \nOriginally coined by Amy Edmondson in 1995\, the concept of psychological safety has become part of workplace culture; there is growing evidence* to indicate that higher-performing teams actually make more mistakes than lower-performing teams. Furthermore\, the higher performing teams were admitting more mistakes\, whilst the lower performing teams were more likely to hide theirs. \nPsychological safety is therefore imperative to positive group performance; via this honesty and openness\, risks are reduced\, new ideas are generated\, the team can execute those ideas\, and everyone feels included. Building psychological safety not only improves organisational outcomes\, but it’s the right thing to do. \n\n\nAbout this event\nThis Peer Learning Forum for BITC members will explore some of the key concepts of psychological safety\, as indicated by Dr. Timothy Clarke\, as well as the risks and opportunities to business\, when psychological safety is embedded within organisational culture. \nWe will: \n\nMake the case for why psychological safety should be adopted at all levels of organisational culture;\nExplore why psychological safety is a driver for positive individual and workplace wellbeing and inclusion outcomes;\nUncover the benefits to businesses and individuals as experienced in other organisations;\nDiscuss how organisations have embedded psychological safety across their organisation\, within teams and peer-to-peer and manager relationships.\n\nGuest speakers \n\n\nChris Garrow\, Head of Safe\, Sustainable and Wellbeing\, VVB Engineering\n\n\nBooking\, contact details and further information\n\nContact Jessica Hart\, Events Coordinator at BITC\, for any further questions.\nFull joining instructions will be sent before the event.\n\nFind out how your organisation can become a member of Business in the Community \n\nReferences \n*Psychological Safety and Learning Behavior in Work Teams

There is also an opportunity to look at what insights are in the pipeline. \n\n\nAbout the Race at Work Charter\nThe Race at Work Charter is seven calls to action to ensure that ethnically diverse employees are represented at all levels in an organisation. The actions include: \n\nAppoint an Executive Sponsor for race.\nCapture ethnicity data and publicise progress.\nCommit at board level to zero tolerance of harassment and bullying.\nMake clear that supporting equality in the workplace is the responsibility of all leaders and managers.\nTake action that supports Black\, Asian\, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse people’s career progression.\nSupport race inclusion allies in the workplace.\nInclude Black\, Asian\, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse-led enterprise owners in supply chains.\n\nLearn more about BITC’s Race at Work Charter. \n\n\nBusiness in the Community’s work on race equality\nBITC is working to ensure all employees feel they belong\, have a voice\, are valued and can be their true selves. \nFor over 27 years\, BITC has been campaigning and helping organisations to ensure Black\, Asian\, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse employees are represented at all levels. \nAll organisations want to recruit from the widest talent pool and help successful applicants progress. It is key to future productivity and performance. Black\, Asian\, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse staff still encounter significant disparities in employment and progression*. The government-sponsored Race in the workplace: The McGregor-Smith Review found that greater progress and positive outcomes are needed to ensure all organisations benefit from the wealth of diverse talent and tap into the potential economic boost of £24bn annually by tackling racial disparities in the workplace and labour market The findings led BITC to create the Race at Work Charter\, with 85 founding signatory organisations committed to improving equality of opportunity in the workplace. \nFind out more about BITC’s work on race equality. \n\n\nBooking\, contact details and further information\n\nContact Jessica Hart\, Events Coordinator at BITC for more information.\nFull joining instructions will be sent before the event.\n\n\n\nReferences\n*Business in the Community (2021) Race at Work 2021 Scorecard Report

SUMMARY:Responsible AI Series: Disrupt your Sustainability Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Join us to consider the positives and negatives that AI will contribute to your environmental sustainability strategy.\n\n\nThis is an online event. \nAudience\nThe Responsible Artificial Intelligence(AI) series is only open to members of Business in the Community (BITC). This event has been designed for Environment/Sustainability practitioners/managers\, CSR/Responsible business/ ESG practitioners/managers and anybody working with AI. \n\n\nBackground\nAI is already a part of our everyday lives\, and the potential for its impact on our ability to get to net zero is huge. AI is already used to track weather events\, pollution and the impact of the climate emergency on the natural world. A Framework for Using AI to Combat Climate Change created by BCG suggests utilising AI for measurement\, reductions and removal; adaptation and resilience; and climate modelling\, finances and education. And BCG are already offering a service to use AI for calculating product lifecycle emissions. Siemens are utilising AI to both save water with VA SYD and cut water pollution with Yorkshire Water\, whilst Google AI is working with the Environmental Defence Fund to monitor methane emissions on a planetary level. \nHowever\, the Climate Action against Disinformation Coalition is concerned about the hype. Some research suggests that increased electricity required to power AI will mean a doubling of data centres and a potential 80% increase in emissions caused by data centres. And in three years from now AI servers could use more electricity than the whole of Sweden.* Certainly the use of AI will increase our emissions in the shorter term. \nBut will the bigger picture make it worth it? What is the art of the possible? Will solutions created by AI in the industry metaverse change the game? And are we ready to innovate to ensure these solutions are created to ensure a net positive outcome for the planet and society? This event will provide a space to discuss some of these questions. \n\n\nAbout the event\n  \nThis events falls in The Great Big Green Week\, close to World Environment Day 2024\, and presents an opportunity for BITC member companies investing in climate action strategies\, to come together to reflect on the risks and opportunities presented by AI. Participants will hear from member companies who are investing in AI as a solution for the future and spark ideas for us to discuss around: \n\nThe positive opportunities that come from embedding AI in our sustainability strategies and solutions\nThe negative impacts of AI that will contribute to our carbon footprint\nThe art of what’s possible – the world that we can seek to create if we innovate to utilise the latest technology\n\n\n\nAbout the Responsible AI series\nAI is poised to transform work\, with implications for people\, places\, and the planet. Every business will engage with AI\, affecting employee support\, customer interactions\, and value chains. Responsible AI practices can enhance business performance and address societal challenges. Poor practices may perpetuate biases and worsen environmental impacts. \nBITC is embarking on a series of dymanic Responsible Business AI events\, spotlighting the critical challenges and barriers that AI poses if businesses fail to embrace responsible integration\, where leaders and practitioners have the opportunity to collaborate with peers and gather insights from our issue area experts and trailblazing businesses within our network. \n\n\nBooking and contact details and further information\n\nContact Jessica Hart\, Events Coordinator at BITC for any further questions.\nFull joining instructions will be sent before the event.\n\nFind out how your organisation can become a member of Business in the Community \n\n\nReferences\n*The Guardian\, 2024 AI likely to increase energy use and accelerate climate misinformation – report | Artificial intelligence (AI) | The Guardian \n

SUMMARY:Windrush 76th Year: Leaders' Inspiring Progress
DESCRIPTION:Join this event to recognise the contributions of the Windrush Generation as part of the 76th Anniversary.\n\n\nAudience\nOpen to all Business in the Community (BITC) members and non-members. This event is designed for HR and people management managers/practitioners\, diversity and inclusion managers/practitioners and senior managers. \n\n\nBackground\nWindrush Day takes place on 22 June every year\, to tribute the HMT Empire Windrush ship which arrived at Tilbury Docks\, Kent in 1948. It carried people from across the various British Commonwealth Caribbean islands\, who had been invited to work in the UK to help rebuild its infrastructure and provide their expertise\, following the devastating impact of the second world war. This migration was to span 20 years. \n\n\nThe importance of Race Equality\nAt Business in the Community\, we mark this day every year. This is part of our ongoing campaign championing Race Equality in the workplace. \nAction by employers could boost the UK economy and lead to increased productivity and returns in the workplace.* \nHowever\, these potential gains are stifled by the barriers faced by ethnically diverse talent in the workplace. ‘At this rate\, it would take over 50 years to reach proportional representation of Black talent in finance and professional services’. Moreover\, representation figures from 2022 Office of National Statistics UK population data show that the pace of change has slowed: 50 years could become up to 70 years.’** \n\n\nAbout the event\nFollowing on from last year’s successful event\, which marked the 75th-anniversary celebrations\, we spoke to three fantastic women and BITC Race Leadership Team that descended from the Windrush Generation. They are in the top table of key industries in the UK in our Windrush at the Top: The Black Talent Scorecard event. \nThis year’s event will have an all-male panel of senior leaders\, who are in the top table of key industries in the UK. By joining this event you will: \n\nLearn practical tips on increasing the rate of recruitment\, retention\, and progression of talent from diverse ethnic backgrounds at senior levels.\nRecognise the contributions of the Windrush generation\, 76 years on.\nHear the stories of senior leaders\, descended from the Windrush Generation\, who have progressed to the top table of key industries in the UK.\nDiscover the early insights of the ‘Leadership\, employees\, and procurement’ survey\, in collaboration with YouGov\, which promotes diverse and inclusive supply chains.\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\nRichard Iferenta\, Partner and Vice-Chair\, KPMG and Chair\, BITC’s Race Equality Leadership Team\nJustin Onuekwusi\, Chief Investment Officer\, St James’s Place (SJP)\, and on BITC’s Race Equality Leadership Team\nRoland Ilube OBE\, SVP Finance – Mobility\, Shell\, and on BITC’s Race Equality Leadership Team\nSandra Kerr CBE\, Race Equality Director\, BITC \n\n\n\nBooking\, contact details and further information\n\nContact Florence Hughes\, Events Manager at BITC\, for any further questions.\nFull joining instructions will be sent before the event.\n\nFind out how your organisation can become a member of Business in the Community \n\n\nReferences\n*Department for Business\, Energy & Industrial Strategy\, (2017) Race in the workplace: The McGregor-Smith Review \n*McKinsey & Company\, (2020) Diversity Wins: How Inclusion Matters \n**Bain & Compant\, (2024) Why We Need to Pick up the Pace of Black Representation in Finance and Professional Services in the UK
