This Business in the Community (BITC) briefing paper/factsheet, Environment Insights from the Responsible Business Tracker® outlines some of the key trends from leading responsible businesses related to environment work drawn from BITC’s Responsible Business Tracker®.

The purpose of the environment sections of the Responsible Business Tracker® is to assess the relationship between governance, strategy, measurement, and action for the following issue areas:

  • Climate Action
  • Nature Stewardship
  • Circular Economy.

Calls to action

The insights show that there is an urgent need for businesses to:

  • broaden their focus to include circular economy and nature stewardship as key pathways to cut emissions and build resilience to climate impacts. BITC’s Seven Steps for Climate Action Toolkit sets out how businesses can build climate action strategies that go beyond net zero and deliver a just transition to a future where people and nature thrive.
  • move from words to action: the public, investors, and government no longer see commitments as good enough and want to see results. It is time to start showing the plans and initiatives that are going to deliver real impact.

About Business in the Community’s Responsible Business Tracker®

The Responsible Business Tracker® is a measurement tool that assesses the performance of a responsible business by tracking progress against BITC’s Responsible Business Map, which was built on the UN’s Global Goals or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BITC has created a series of briefing papers to outline some of the key trends from the latest intake related to ESG (environment, social and governance) from leading responsible businesses.

Other briefings in this series will focus on:

  • Social (including health and wellbeing, employment and skills, diversity and inclusion)
  • Governance (purpose, values, governance, transparency, value chain).

The Global Goals provide a shared blueprint to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. They recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth. All while tackling climate change and working to preserve oceans and forests.
