National Numeracy Day – Employers have a key role to play

Rachael Saunders, Education Director, Business in the Community comments on National Numeracy Day
"A lack of numeracy skills can have a significant impact – not just on individuals but on the UK economy as a whole. However, numeracy is one of many skills that are vital for young people to thrive at work in future. Employers have a key role to play in this by working with schools to include skills development – not only literacy and numeracy, but also resilience and other employability skills. By giving young people the opportunity to develop and enhance these skills, they will equip them for a changing work environment and enable them to build successful working lives.
People with low numeracy skills are twice as likely to be unemployed and low numeracy levels cost employers £3.2bn per year. That’s why National Numeracy Day is so important in promoting the need for better numeracy skills for everyone, and we support this initiative to help people of all ages."
